Our Story

I’m Shakina, and The Woodly started with something very simple — a wooden comb.

I grew up in India, where using natural products was completely normal. We had wooden combs, bamboo products and simple everyday things made from natural materials. At the time, I never really thought about whether they were “eco-friendly” or sustainable. They were just part of life.

When I moved to Toronto in 2021, I started noticing how different things were.

So many everyday products were made of plastic — toothbrushes, combs, brushes, packaging. Things I had grown up using in wood or other natural materials were suddenly plastic.

And strangely enough, one of the things I really missed was my wooden comb.

It sounds like such a small thing, but when I started using one again, it reminded me why I had always liked it in the first place. I loved the feel of the wood, the simplicity of it, and the fact that something I used every day didn’t have to be made from plastic.

I started sharing these products with friends, and they were genuinely curious about them. They would ask me where they could buy them or tell me how different they felt from the products they normally used.

That’s when the idea for The Woodly slowly started to take shape.

I wanted to bring together the kinds of products I grew up around and make them easily available here in Canada — while also celebrating the materials and craftsmanship behind them.

The Woodly began with wooden combs and grew into a collection of simple, thoughtfully chosen products made from materials like wood and bamboo.

For me, this brand is about more than replacing one plastic product with a wooden one.

It connects a little piece of where I grew up with the life I have built here in Canada. It reminds me that sometimes the simplest things we grew up with still have a place in the way we live today.

I’m still building The Woodly, learning as I go, and choosing products that I would genuinely be happy to use myself.

I hope when you receive something from The Woodly, it feels simple, useful and a little more connected to nature.
